The F-16 Fighting Falcon is a compact, multi-role fighter aircraft. It is highly maneuverable and has proven itself in air-to-air combat and air-to-surface attack. It provides a relatively low-cost, high-performance weapon system for the United States and allied nations. The F-16 first flew in December 1976. The first operational F-16A was delivered in January 1979 to the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing at Hill Air Force Base, Utah. The F16 kit available from Paper Creations is a replica of the South Carolina Air National Guard aircraft. The 169th Fighter Wing (Swamp Fox) is also a regular participant in the Air Expeditionary Force, which patrols the Iraqi no-fly zones. The unit has deployed for Operation Southern Watch (Qatar, 1996), to Operation Northern Watch (Turkey, 2000), and again to Southern Watch (Saudi Arabia, 2001). The 169th FW was the first Air National Guard unit to deploy alongside active-duty Air Force units to comprise an Air Expeditionary Force. The South Carolina Air National Guard is also involved in Operation Iraqi Freedom .
